Government supports another timber initiative

27 May 2008

The wood processing sector today announced a multi-million dollar research and development initiative co-funded by the industry and the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.

The programme’s objective is to develop multi-storey building systems using Laminated Veneer Lumber to construct wide-span, multi-storey buildings. The primary application for this new technology will include commercial, educational, industrial, recreational and multi-storey residential buildings.

Announcing the decision today, the Wood Processors Association Chief Executive Peter Bodeker said that the $5 million investment by the industry shows its commitment to developing systems to utilise the stock of wood coming from New Zealand plantation forests. Further, he said the increased use of wood and wood-based products is essential when climate change and carbon neutrality is being discussed.

Compared with traditional buildings, the new buildings will be more attractive and desirable places to live and work, with lower structural weight allowing easier transportation of components and less expensive foundations. Buildings will be easier to heat and cool with better acoustic performance and be more resistant to major earthquakes and extreme weather events.

The use of wood in our residential and increasingly in non-residential buildings is crucial and the work that this project will undertake will ensure stocks of wood in these buildings increases.

The research and development will be managed by an independent board, centred on expertise at Canterbury and Auckland universities.
