WPA Technical Conference
WPA hosted its annual technical conference in Rotorua on Thursday 23 July and Friday 24 July 2009.
This year's conference was hosted by the Waiariki Institute of Technology.
As in previous years the WPA Technical Conference was an opportunity, in an informal setting, to hear the progress WPA is making on some of the aspects of the work that we are undertaking on behalf of our members. The morning session covered aspects of biosecurity and members had an opportunity to discuss with senior Biosecurity New Zealand staff the implications of current and proposed export standards on their businesses. The afternoon was focused on timber grading and treatment and the implications this will have on all of our members and affiliates. Ian Boyd, the Chief Executive of FITEC, updated members on the current developments within education and training and Geoff Henley provided members with a summary of the first two and a half years of the NZ Wood programme and an indication of the proposed quality mark.
The second day of the conference included presentations from staff from Scion updating the research and development projects they have underway and Waiariki Institute of Technology hosted attendees on a visit to their sawmill and kiln drying training facility.
